Setup guides, downloads and fixes for AVION products. If you’re still stuck, we’ll help.

AVION F4 quick start

From the box to a first hover. Keep the propellers off until the last step.

  1. Mount the board

Use the 30.5 × 30.5 mm mounting holes with soft grommets. Note which way the board faces: if it isn’t facing forward, you’ll set board alignment in the configurator.

  2. Wire power and motors

Power the board from your ESC or battery lead (2S to 6S) and connect the four ESC signal wires to the motor outputs, M1 to M4.

  3. Connect your receiver and extras

Connect a serial receiver, such as ExpressLRS, to a free UART. Use the other UARTs for GPS, VTX control, telemetry or dNavi.

  4. Open a configurator

Use Betaflight (app.betaflight.com) or INAV Configurator on a computer, or the SpeedyBee app on your phone. Connect the board over USB.

  5. Flash firmware if needed

To update or switch firmware, flash the AVION F4 file from Downloads. If the board isn’t detected while flashing, see Troubleshooting below.

  6. Set up ports, receiver and motors

Turn on Serial RX for the receiver’s UART, choose your receiver protocol and set the motor protocol to DShot. With propellers off, check each motor’s position and spin direction in the Motors tab.

  7. Calibrate and fly

Calibrate the accelerometer on a level surface, set up an arm switch and failsafe, then make your first hover in Angle mode.

Firmware

  • Betaflight

For freestyle and racing. Flash the AVION F4 target from Downloads, or use the latest stable release with our configuration file.

  • INAV

For GPS navigation, position hold and missions. INAV 8 and later no longer publish official builds for F411 boards, so use INAV 7 on AVION F4, or ask us for the build we test with.

Troubleshooting

The board isn’t detected over USB

Try a different cable first: many USB cables only carry power. On Windows, install the STM32 drivers (ImpulseRC Driver Fixer installs them in one step). Then try another USB port, and close any other program that might be using the serial port.

Flashing fails, or the board is stuck in DFU mode

Reconnect in DFU mode and flash again with Full chip erase turned on. Make sure you’re using the AVION F4 firmware file, not a file for another board.

Motors spin in the wrong order or direction

With propellers off, check the order in the Motors tab against the diagram. Fix direction in your ESC configurator or with the Motor direction is reversed setting. If outputs are in the wrong place, remap them with the resource command in the CLI.

The receiver isn’t working

Check that receiver TX goes to flight controller RX, that Serial RX is turned on for that UART, and that the receiver protocol matches your receiver.

Altitude hold drifts

Make sure the foam over the barometer is in place and the board is shielded from prop wash and direct sunlight. Give the board a minute to warm up before arming.

The gyro trace looks noisy

Check the board is soft-mounted and that no wires press against it. Balance your props and check for bent motor shafts.

Batteries

Charge with a balance charger, store packs at about half charge, and stop using any pack that swells or gets hot. More on battery care.

If a pack arrives damaged or swollen, don’t charge it. Contact us with your order number and a photo.
